ILCML
Type of Event
: Internacional Conference
Dates: June, 1-2 2018
Local: Faculdade de Letras, Universidade de Porto
Organization: Instituto de Literatura Comparada Margarida Losa

On June 1st and 2nd, 2018, the 4th edition of the Queering International Luso-Afro-Brazilian Studies Colloquium will be held at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto. This colloquium aims to promote “queer” readings of works of authorship and canonical artists, as well as to recover authors considered “minor” or marginal in the scope of Portuguese, Brazilian and African literature  in the Portuguese cultural expression, of any historical period.
“Queer” will be understood as a useful theoretical tool to debate what escapes the symbolic and social norm, which resists categorization, cultural homogenization, normativity and, in particular, heteronormativity – what Monique Wittig called “Straight Thinking”.
Thus, the present papers will explore the literature or visual arts of Portuguese expression from a theoretical and epistemological perspective centered on the destabilization of the notions of gender identity and sexual orientation, as well as in the deconstruction of the binomial man/woman, nature/culture , sex/gender, hetero/homo, normal/abnormal and public/private. We will try debate the multiple differences generated by categories such as sex, gender, race and ethnicity, which are particularly rooted in the social and cultural practices of our societies.

Óscar Lopes Journey

ILCML

Type of Event: Journey
Date: October, 2 2018
Local: Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto
Organization: Instituto de Literatura Comparada Margarida Losa

He was notable as an essayist, linguist and literary critic and, among many other epithets that fit in a singular way, was the first director of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Porto (FLUP) in the post-25th of April. Óscar Lopes is the Eminent Figure of U.Porto 2018, an initiative that, throughout the year, proposes to celebrate the legacy of this unique personality of the history of the University and central figure of Portuguese culture of the second half of the twentieth century and beginning of the twenty-first century .

Promoted by the Rectory and the Faculty of Letters of the U.Porto (FLUP), the homage follows the evocative events of U.Porto emeritus personalities carried out over the last decade. All this through a series of actions open to the community, which, for several months and in different spaces, intend to remember, but above all celebrate the life and work of the one who “was a humanist and a wise man of many knowledges.”

After several initiatives throughout the year 2018 is at the Faculty of Letters, home of Óscar Lopes, which will take place what promises to be the highlights of the program of celebrations. On October 2nd, Tuesday and throughout the day (10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.), in the FLUP Meeting Room, the philosopher and essayist Eduardo Lourenço will join other essayists, writers and university professors in the area of literature for a day of debate dedicated to the theme “Óscar Lopes: the Seminal Power of the Word”.
