Diderot: Paradoxs of an actor. III Centenary of Birth

_Cartaz_A3_PRESS_v02

Type of Event: International Colloquium
Date: 14-15 March 2013
Local: Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto
Organization: Instituto de Literatura Comparada Margarida Losa

In 2013 the three hundred years on the birth of Denis Diderot were celebrated. The ILC-ML, in coordination with MET-UP, APEF and the CET / UL, organized from 14 to 15 March in Porto, a subordinate conference on the theme “Diderot: an actor of paradoxes”. Few authors can be so important for the intersections of specific thoughts and the construction of a transtextual discourse. Starting from the critical axis of Diderot’s book on the actor, known as “Paradoxe sur le Comédien”, we will try in this colloquium to reflect closely on the ways in which this author has marked theater and theatrical studies, from his time up to the present day. The following thematic centers are planned: 1. The critical edition of Diderot’s texts and the definition of his thought on theater; 2. Reception in Portugal / Europe of the work and thought of Diderot, in theatrical studies; 3. The constitution of an ideal model of theatrical art: Actor of imitation vs. actor of nature, “comédien sensible” and “comédien de t.te”; 4. Diderot’s Stylistics and Rhetoric: “Pathos”, “Ethos” and “Logos”; 5. The bourgeois drama, the English theater and the melodrama: the renewal of the tragic genre; 6. Theatrical dialogue and illusion; 7. Physiology of the dramatic experience; 8. Skepticism and Dramatic Pretense; 9. The woman in the theater of Diderot: characters, actresses and public in the feminine; 10. From philosophy to theatrical aesthetics: the relationship between sensations and dialogue between the arts.

The Exile and the Kingdom: from Albert Camus to Vergílio Ferreira

camusvf

Type of event: International Colloquium
Dates: 15, 21, 23 May 2013
Local: Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto e Institut Français du Portugal (Lisboa).
Organization: Instituto de Filosofia (FLUP) + Instituto de Literatura Comparada Margarida Losa

Albert Camus was born on November 7, 1913. It’s now 100 years. Vergílio Ferreira was born a little later, on January 28, 1916. Enough to read Albert Camus and for having been influenced. In 1943, 70 years ago, Virgílio Ferreira born as a writer by publishing O Caminho Fica Longe. We don’ t always choose our readings, but we always choose our influences. Albert Camus and Vergílio Ferreira chose to live on the edge of the razor, along the border lines: those that unite philosophy and literature, solitude and solidarity, revolt and historical fatalism, between the exile of the kingdom and the kingdom of exile. It’s good to hear them and speak of them at a time when we are told there is no alternative.

Écrire au féminin en Belgique : indicatif présent | Identités, styles & tendances (1985-2013)

belgique

Type of event: Scientific Conference
Date: 15 October 2013

tep

Type of Event: International Colloquium
Dates: 29-30 October 2013
Local: Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto e Fundação Eng.º António de Almeida
Organization: Instituto de Literatura Comparada Margarida Losa + TEP

In the year in which TEP celebrates it’s sixtieth anniversary, more than a commemoration or an evocation of an undeniably rich past, it’s intended, with this colloquium, to critically address the work of the company developed since the 1950s and, in particular, the most recent work. The artistic heritage of TEP has motivated several academic works that are related to the studies of it’s particular history, with the relevance of its presence in the history of the theater in Portugal, with the study of some more relevant figure of it’s course or, with the analysis of any particular show, poster, text or translation.
This colloquium will be an opportunity for a broad community of stakeholders to find and share knowledge around the same object of study. At the same time, we want to publicize the work of academics who have been working on TEP, aiming to promote the artistic heritage of the company and to emphasize it’0s relevance in the construction of the country’s cultural identity.

Comings and Returns: Declinations of Travel

viagens

Type of event: International Colloquium
Dates: 28-30 November 2013
Local: Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto
Organization: Instituto de Literatura Comparada Margarida Losa

The experience of displacement asserts itself as a constant in the course of humanity, giving rise to multiple declinations of the journey. Lived as need, adventure or chance, from the viatic experience emerge various figurations that translate into literature texts, fictional or frictionals, in the happy term of Ottmar Ette, in dialogue with a pictorial or filmic textuality, sometimes summoning a relevant plurimediality. This colloquium had as objective to reflect on the multiple sign of the viatic phenomenon, proposing several topics or axes of approach centered on the comings and the returns, the figurations of a traveller an the writers or other creators that move (from/to Portugal).

What is the end of the world? A universal judgment of humanity? A global, imminent, man made catastrophe? The allegory of a world that has lost it’s (meta) narratives, without truth and without destiny, after Auschwitz and Sarajevo? The pretext for the seduction of the spectacle, between catastrophe films and a delightful imagery of destruction? Or the confrontation of each one with his own death? Why are we fascinated and terrified by this age-old theme, never solved – and what do we gain by exploiting our own terror?
