Call for Papers: International Conference “Knowing me, Knowing Things”

A homage to Maria Velho da Costa on her 80th birthday

The International Conference “Knowing me, knowing things: a homage to Maria Velho da Costa on her 80th birthday” will be held at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto and the São João National Theatre (TNSJ) during November 12-13, 2018. Widely acclaimed as one of the greatest authors of Portuguese literature in the last half-century, the work of Maria Velho da Costa has been the object of various studies and articles, thus evidencing the continuing interest and currentness of her writings. This event is a joint project of the Intertextualities Group of the Institute for Comparative Literature and the São João National Theatre (TNSJ); its purpose is to commemorate the oeuvre of Maria Velho da Costa on the year of her 80th birthday through a number of activities which will certainly contribute to the promotion and study of her life and works.

Among these activities, we will have the pleasure of welcoming two confirmed keynote speakers, Claudia Pazos-Alonso(University of Oxford), Helena Carvalhão Buescu(University of Lisbon), and Maria Irene Ramalho(University of Wisconsin-Madinson/University of Coimbra), and hosting a roundtable discussion with artists who have worked, both in the theatre and the cinema, with Maria Velho da Costa’s oeuvre.

Researchers and scholars of Maria Velho da Costa are also welcome to present and discuss their findings and considerations. The conference will be structured around five main topics:

  • Censorship and the political dimension of Maria Velho da Costa’s work;
  • Maria Velho da Costa and feminism in Portugal and throughout the world;
  • Intermedialities (theatre, cinema, visual arts);
