Salvation of the World Seminars

Between 2013 and 2018, the Institute for Comparative Literature Margarida Losa organized a series of End of the World Seminars. During twenty-four sessions, they talked about the representation and the imaginary of the catastrophe, the cancellation of time, the ruin of civilizations, the end of human existence; they called for artistic, philosophical, theological, political perspectives; they questioned poems, films, comic strips, video games… After a year’s break (or a sabbatical rest…), it is urgent to return to all these issues – to try to think their reverse.
If human history records so many forms of destruction and oblivion, how can the world be saved if the end is an insistent and plural threat? What words, gestures, and actions can be used to confront catastrophe and destruction? How can the arts invent resistance models, rescue memories, create a new universe, and a new existence? And finally: why does the world deserve to be saved?
To answer these questions, the Institute for Comparative Literature Margarida Losa organizes in 2020 the first series of the World Salvation Seminars, held online and streamed by youtube. These seminars will take place between November and December and consist of a lecture and a final debate with the participating public.
