Marta Várzeas

Marta Isabel de Oliveira Várzeas is Professor in the Department of Portuguese Studies and Romance Studies at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Porto, she teaches courses in the area of Classical Studies. She is a researcher at the Center for Classical and Humanistic Studies at the University of Coimbra. She has a PhD in Greek Literature and has published, in addition to various articles in magazines and chapters in thematic monographs, the books Silêncios no Teatro de Sófocles, Lisbon, Cosmos, 2001; A Força da Palavra no Teatro de Sófocles. Between Rhetoric and Poetics, Lisbon, FCG, 2009. She is the author of translations of classical Greek texts such as Plutarch, Lives of Demosthenes and Cicero, Coimbra University Press, 2010; Sophocles, Antigone, Porto, Húmus, 2011; Dionysius Longinus, Treatise on the Sublime, Coimbra University Press, 2015; Plutarch, How the young should listen to the poets, Coimbra University Press, 2022. With Belmiro Pereira he edited the volumes As Artes de Prometeu – Estudos em Homenagem a Ana Paula Quintela, Porto, Faculty of Letters, 2009; Retórica e Teatro: a Palavra em Acção, Porto, U.Porto, 2010 and Retórica e Poética, Coimbra University Press, 2021.
