Open Seminar with Hugo Frey

September 19th

Open Seminar with Professor Hugo Frey (Univ. of Chichester), on 19 September 2024, in room 111, at 5 p.m.

Abstract: This seminar will explore the collaboration of Louis Malle and Patrick Modiano on the important 1974 film Lacombe Lucien. To begin to understand each figure in more detail it will pose the unusual question of how to read the filmmaker as a writer, and the writer framed by images. Malle and Modiano continue to be two of the most relevant figures to explore memories of French history and the Holocaust in film and literature.

Hugo Frey is Professor of Cultural and Visual History at the University of Chichester, in the UK. He is the author, co-author or co-editor of several books, including Louis Malle (2004), Nationalism and the Cinema in France (2014), The Graphic Novel: An Introduction (2015), The Cambridge History of the Graphic Novel (2018), and the upcoming Pulp Pop Comics: Barbarella and the Look of the 1960s (2025).
