About ILCML
The Margarida Losa Institute for Comparative Literature (ILCML) is a Research Unit based at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto, whose work is fundamentally focused on the field of Literary Studies, Art Studies, Cultural Studies and Feminist Studies, in conjunction with other scientific areas such as Philosophy or Sociology.
The Unit is currently made up of 28 full members and 85 collaborators (including junior PhD students and post-doctoral researchers, as well as researchers based in foreign universities), who foster a dynamic international research culture.
The ILCML hosts 3 knowledge bases and 2 databases and an online portal for an international research network. The Institute publishes 3 electronic journals, 2 digital book series, and 4 printed book series, having in its catalog award-winning books of essays.
Many of its researchers collaborate in different study cycles and advanced training courses at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto and maintain collaboration protocols with various local and national cultural institutions.
The Institute also participates in several international projects and regularly organizes seminars, international colloquia, multidisciplinary events and university extension activities, benefiting from a wide community of visiting researchers, lecturers and guest artists.
Always seeking to combine excellence with scientific relevance, the ILCML is dedicated to the study of issues that involve Literature in its different expressions and intercultural, interartistic and interdiscursive relationships. The team is thus organized around three research groups – Inter/Transculturalities, Intermedialities and Intersexualities – which, despite their respective specificities, often work collaboratively and complement one another.
In the external evaluation process of the R&D Units coordinated by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), the strategic projects of the ILCML received the maximum score and the final classification of “Excellent” and “Exceptional” in the periods 2008-2014 and 2015- 2019, respectively.
